Philip II of Macedonia, father of Alexander III the Great, is recognized by every historian as one of the greatest kings of ancient times. Educated as a youngster in Greece by Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, he is acknowledged as an exceptional strategist, politician and monarch.

In 342 B.C., the army of Philip II conquered the Thracian settlement of Eumolpia. At once, Philip saw the importance of this city built upon hills rising from the Thracian plain because here was located the most direct land connection from Middle Europe to Asia Minor. Philip built a new town, named in his honor, with splendid public works, temples and a stadium.

Following Philip, the Romans and Byzantine had a constant interest to keep the town, with its natural fortifications, under their control. The Roman emperors Trayanus and Marcus Aurellius built solid fortresses around the town.

Plovdiv has been a center for the traveler for thousands of years; the ancient highway through through the city carried valuable trade between Belgrade and Constantinople (Istanbul). Along this highway, stations for the traveller were built every 10 km with inns. This highway was crossed with another connecting to the Agean Sea.

Old Town Plovdiv is a city within a city. And you will not fail to marvel at the original Roman city walls and gates which still stand in parts of the old town. Plovdiv's Old Town section is preserved as an authentic 19th Century Bulgarian Renaissance open-air museum and features the amazing romantic architecture of that era.

Here is the center of Bulgarian National Revival architecture at its height. Developing in a natural way, the Bulgarian building traditions form the core around which the new styles of the time evolved.

Visit Plovdiv, where you will re-discover the wonders of history everywhere ... in front of your eyes and beneath your feet as you walk the cobblestone streets of this milleniums-old city. Old Town Plovdiv's cobblestone streets twist and turn to accommodate the grades.
