One of the greatest masterpieces of Bulgaria's master builder Kolyu Ficheto is the bridge over the Yantra river in the central northern Bulgarian town of Byala.
Ficheto built the bridge near the beginning of the 19th century during Ottoman rule.
According to legend, the Turkish governor at the time ordered a stone bridge to be built to replace the rickety wooden structure that was inevitably washed away every spring by the surging Yantra river. |
