Note the map (left) spelling translation for Starossel. The sign (above) seems incorrect. See our page on Cyrillic.
13 km north of Plovdiv we turn left to the village of Kaloyanovo.
At Panicheri there is another sign.
In
Starosel, the signs become less ornate. The translation of the inset
sign (exploded from the main image) is "to the temples".
This
is the worker's entrance to the temple excavation. The stones in
the foreground have been removed from temple entrance and are in
temporary storage here. This tomb is not yet open to the public.
There is a guard on duty and a strong wooden door at the front.
But
this did not prevent us from looking through the small windows and
get some idea of what is being uncovered inside.
These
columns were found broken and laying on their sides at the entrance.
The workers have uprighted them into their proper position.
At
the right hand side of this photo is the entrance to the burial crypt.
This section will be entered later this year.
Down
the road (the asphalt ends a few meters from where we took this picture) and off to the right
is the tomb which has been opened to the public. Hundreds of tourists
in busses visit here every day. Photos from this openened tomb are shown in the thumbnails below.
